Director of rugby Brett Taylor was annoyed to see his men take their foot off the gas as two late Nuneaton tries took the gloss off an otherwise perfect response to last week’s defeat to National Division One title favourites Esher.
The Exiles hit back with a comfortable bonus-point 34-10 triumph in the midlands thanks to tries from Matt Johnson, Alex Karonias, Charlie Broughton and David Howells - plus a penalty try - on Saturday.
The hosts only managed to get on the scoreboard in the final ten minutes, as Scottish tightened their grip on second place in the table and remained within a bonus point win of the leaders.
“When we pulled the trigger we played with some real pace and precision,” he said.
“The last passage of play we defended some 19 phases, but I think ultimately we took our foot off the pedal and the two scores were pretty annoying.”
Third-placed Launceston crashed 24-25 at home to Newbury, while fourth placed Cambridge went down 20-17 at home to Tynedale to leave Taylor’s men as the only real challengers to Esher’s supremacy.
The Athletic Ground outfit play host to Blaydon this weekend wary of their 42-10 thrashing of Redruth, but buoyed by the return of influential forward Mark Soden.
“They are a massively physical side, have come off a good win and will feel they have a point to prove after we beat them last time,” he added.
Socttish’s next three games: Jan 30 Blaydon (h), Feb 6 Blackheath (a), 13 Wharfedale (a).
