Richmond and England rugby star Amy Turner reckons losing Sunday’s Women’s World Cup final to New Zealand will only inspire her to go one step further in four years time.
The Epsom-born 26-year-old, who started playing the game at Kingston RFC, laid on her side’s only try for Charlotte Barrass as the Red Roses were edged out 13-10 by the Black Ferns in front of a record-breaking 13,253 crowd at the Stoop.
It is the third time England have lost to New Zealand in the final and former Holy Cross School student Turner is determined to make it fourth time lucky.
“I would love to have ended this tournament with a gold medal. We came into it to win it, but when we played New Zealand, it just wasn’t meant to be,” she said.
“I am absolutely gutted. I couldn’t play at the level that I play and not be hugely disappointed. At this standard you set out to win, but I am proud of how we played, not just in the final but throughout the World Cup.
“We’ve definitely gone forward as a nation and as a team. It’s given me the drive to keep on going, so I guess we’ve got to keep working and keep plugging away to get the result we want in four years time.”
