Surrey Division One champions Battersea Ironsides followed in the footsteps of giants to lift the National Junior Vase trophy at Twickenham on Sunday.

A Guy Newman try and 18 points from the boot of fly half Charlie Stuart secured a relatively comfortable 23-7 win over Yorkshire outfit Northallerton to secure a famous league and cup couble.

Tha game was played hours after a star-studded French giants Toulon claimed the European Champions Cup title with a 24-18 win over Clermont Auvergne at the same venue.

Ironsides were made to work hard in the opening half hour, but once replacement Newman collected Ash Hallett's off-load to score next to the posts for a 14-7 advantage the resullt rarely looked in doubt.

"We were always confident so we always knew we had the beating of them," said captain Colin O'Keeffe.

"We won our league and have only lost one game this season to the team that finished second to us.

"We knew we could do it. We beat last year's champions in the semi-final and we did not want to let up.

"We had the chat and the structure. We were all out on our feet at the end - it did not feel like we won by nearly two tries.

"We're just all delighted all our patterns of play won through. This has to be celebrated."

Centre Newman, a player at Battersea since the age of six, came on for hamstring injury victim Max Woodcock in the first half.

The 22-year-old had only expected to appear in the second half depending on how the game went.

But he touched down after Hallett had collected a chip through from fly half Stuart to give his side a decisive 14-7 half time lead.

"I was just really pleased we won," added the Nottingham University student.

"It was a great try set up mainly by great work from our fly half and I was just lucky to be in the right place at the time.

"I was gutted for Max, but was buzzing to get on the pitch. I'm just buzzing for the boys. It means so much to the club and the fans.

"I've been at the club for so long, so to come to Twickenham and to do that, it means the world to me."

Ironsides can complete a memorably triple trophy triumph on Monday when they face Camberley in the final of the Surrey Shield at Esher RFC's Molesey Road home.
