The A316 will be partially closed during match days in the Rugby World Cup after a request from tournament organisers.

The council and Transport for London (TfL) have agreed in principle to close part of the road on match days, which leader of Richmond Council Lord True described as a "major step".

Lord True admitted the tournament, kicking off in September, would have an impact on roads and public transport around Twickenham stadium.

He said: "We want Rugby World Cup 2015 to be a success and for visitors to our borough from around the world to have a memorable time.

"However, we are also aware that the tournament is inevitably going to have an impact on our local roads and public transport.

"Temporary closure of the A316 sounds a major step. That is why the council has ensured that it is only coming forward following careful modelling work by TfL on the options - this is still subject to modification."

The closure could be trialled during England's fixtures against France and Ireland prior to the tournament beginning.

A series of briefings for residents and businesses has been organised with representatives from the council, the RFU, England 2015, TfL and Richmond police.

Businesses can attend the Salon at York House, Twickenham, on either February 27 or March 3 between 8.30am and 10am.

For residents, briefings will be held at Chase Bridge Primary School, Whitton, on March 5, the Turk's Head pub in St Margarets on March 9, Clarendon Hall, Twickenham on March 17 and Richmond Adult Community College on March 23.

All resident briefings are held from 6.30pm to 8.30pm but remember to RSVP at richmond.gov.uk/rugby_world_cup.
