Rosslyn Park coach Alex Codling reckons his players have deserved their Christmas break from action in National League One.

In the penultimate game of the year, Park came up just short against Ealing Trailfinders, which preceded defeat at Blackheath - only their third reverse in 16 games this season.

Codling said: “The Ealing game took a massive amount out of the group both emotionally and physically.

“This was evident against Blackheath. Despite not being at our best, after 60 minutes we were in control of the game 21-8 but there was just nothing left in the tank.

“The boys deserve the rest after putting in a huge effort over the past 12 months and there have been many great memories and performances for the boys to be extremely proud of."

The new year kicks off on Saturday with Park, in third, hosting Fylde, in fourth, at the Rock.

With former England boss Brian Ashton back on their coaching staff, the Lancashire side play an exciting open running game that can destroy any side on their day.

But Park really need a win plus a four-try bonus point to reignite their title challenge - that looks a tough ask from what should be a classic game of rugby.

Codling has the rare luxury of almost a complete squad to pick from with players returning from injury, though prop Henry Staff will miss the rest of the season due to a nagging shoulder injury.

Centre Paul Mackey is also out injured for the next few matches.
