Beijing bound: Elmbridge Canoe Club star Tim Brabants
Elmbridge Canoe Club members Tim Brabants and Anna Hemmings have booked their place on the plane to the Beijing Olympics by securing qualification at the European Flat Water Canoeing Championships at the weekend.
Walton-based Brabants took gold in the K1 1000m race by 0.07 secs ahead of Hungarian Gabor Kuscera on Sunday after a disappointing 10th place in Saturday's 500m race in Italy.
Brabants will represent Great Britain in both disciplines having claimed gold and silver over the distances at world, European and pre-Olympics championships in 2007.
And BCU world class performance director John Anderson paid tribute to his 30-year-old star man, adding: "This is another great win for Tim - a great confidence booster - and it's fabulous for GB."
Clubmate Hemmings, a five-time world champion and Britain's greatest ever female canoeist, finished first in the K2 500m B final - and 10th overall - with partner Jess Walker.
The pair, in third place with 10 metres to go, surged clear to take the race by 0.1 seconds to add another qualifying spot for the British team for China. Hemmings is looking to add Olympic sprint gold to her glittering array of accolades.
