Angelique Kerber claimed her third grand slam title and first at Wimbledon after she outplayed Serena Williams in the final.

Kerber beat the American 6-3 6-3 on Centre Court to avenge her defeat in the final two years ago.

Here, Press Association Sport lists five things you might not have known about the German.

Her idol is Steffi Graf

After growing up in Bremen in the 1990s and being tennis-mad from an early age, there was only ever going to be one idol for Kerber. Graf, a 22-time grand slam singles champion, has been a huge influence on Kerber’s career and even invited the 30-year-old to her Las Vegas home in 2016 to work on her game after a first-round Indian Wells exit.

She was the first German to win a grand slam singles this century

Little did Graf know at the time, but her French Open triumph in 1999 would be the last time a German would land a grand slam singles title until Kerber broke that drought at the Australian Open in 2016. Kerber has now become the first German to win at Wimbledon since Graf’s 1996 title.

She is a big Bayern Munich fan

Despite hailing from northern Germany, Kerber is a devoted Bayern Munich supporter and takes in games when she can. She said in 2013: “I was a Bayern fan right from being a small child, despite coming from northern Germany. Everyone around us supported HSV (Hamburg) or Bremen, so I was the odd one out.”

Her mother is also her manager

Kerber says her mother, Beata, is “the most important person my life” but her influence stretches way beyond that of most parents. Kerber has played tennis since the age of three, and Beata has been the driving force on the court since her professional career began at the age of 15.

She runs her own tennis academy

Kerber actually lives in Poland, which is where the Angelique Kerber Tennis Academy is based. Opened in 2006, “Angie” ranks among the biggest tennis clubs in the country and possesses four indoor carpet courts and four outdoor Laykold hard courts – the only ones in Poland.
