New Malden’s Tom Onslow-Cole is confident he can challenge at the front of the British Touring Car Championship race next year, providing he can get in a Next Generation Touring Car (NGTC).

The 25-year-old has had a solid if unspectacular campaign with Team eBay Motors in their S-2000 spec BMW – a season encapsulated in Sunday’s 10th, sixth and fifth place finishes at Silverstone.

Onslow-Cole, who has a slim chance of winning the independent drivers’ championship at Brands Hatch on October 21, is seventh in the overall drivers’ standings and is without a race win in two years, but he is hopeful of staying with the Lower Sunbury-based outfit for 2013.

And he revealed work had already started to get him in a competitive car next term.

“An S-2000 car was never going to win the championship this year,” he said.  It is clear NGTC cars are the future so we have been one step behind this year.

“It is now all about next year for me. I’m definitely looking to stay with the team providing a deal can get sorted. With any luck that will be in a new NGTC BMW car if the team can agree a deal.

“If that can happen over the winter – and we’ll be working hard to try to
make it happen – then I will be looking forward to challenging for the title next year.”

Worcester Park’s Howard Fuller took his Team Hard Honda Civic to two 11th place finishes.
