Twickenham motorhead Mitchell Gilbert sealed his debut season as a German Formula 3 driver in fine style, claiming a podium finish and the runner-up spot in the rookie cup.
Moreover, after his third and two fourth-placed finishes in the final weekend of racing at Hockenheim, the Australian born 18-year-old driver beat many seasoned racers to claim fourth in the overall standings.
Gilbert, who will move on to the F3 EuroSeries next season, came into the last weekend knowing he had a shot at winning the rookie cup, and it all started so well.
“The guys ahead of me in the points had some disappointing results, but I wasn’t able to capitalise on them in the final race,” said Gilbert, pictured above.
“It’s been a fantastic season though. I said I would use it to learn as much as I could and hope that the results would come. I’ve regularly been on the podium and taken my first race wins in F3 in my rookie year, so I can’t complain.”
