The national hot rods "Best in Britain" championship returns to its spiritual home of Wimbledon stadium this weekend.

Sunday’s action will be a break from qualifying for next year’s World Championship, and will be the drivers first return to the stadium for a few years.

For some, it is a dream come true to have the opportunity to drive through the famous pit tunnel, and into the enclosed atmosphere.

While for others, they can be forgiven a little anticipation of the infamous Wimbledon safety fence, which over the years has claimed the very best.

The stadium may have changed over the years, but the atmosphere of national hot rods racing at Wimbledon has always remained the same.

This meeting creates history once again, by offering a prize fund of £10,000.

The second formula of the evening is a reminder of the cars that once graced the great stadium, and put down the roots of what national hot rods are today, the classic hot rods.

The 1970s and 80s saw Mk1 and Mk2 Ford Escorts, rubbing wheel arches with Ford Anglias, Minis and even the odd Ford Capri.

Replicating the past, but very much a modern day formula, the classic hot rods are a firm favourite whenever they visit Plough Lane.

The sight of so many Fords is only bettered by the unique Vauxhall campaigned by Lee Wood.

Andy Steward with vast Wimbledon knowledge may start favourite, but as well as being impeccably presented Lee Wood’s Vauxhall is a proven winner on any raceway.

Completing the night’s card, is another popular ‘retro’ formula, the Historic Stock cars.

Among the diverse grid of Triumphs and Fords will be fans' favourite Gordon Coull - the former national banger star will be fresh from his television commentating duties at the recent World Banger Final at Ipswich.

Racing starts at 5.30pm with turnstiles open at 4.30pm.
