Mitcham driver Colin Jones will be out to win the 2l Stock Car Supreme Championship this evening, as his home track of Wimbledon plays host to the formula’s largest race of the season.

Jones is feeling confident ahead of the meeting, after coming away from the Primo Northampton International Raceway on Sunday, having won the Midlands Championship title.

He had struggled in the early races with only a fourth place to show for his efforts, but in the final he was on fire, beating a quality field of drivers to lift the trophy.

The experienced pair of Colin Farley and Morden’s Jimmy Morris are guaranteed to be in the mix for the Championship, while 17-year-old rising star Brandon Osborne from Brighton, is a strong contender after winning the Bet Fred Trophy earlier in the season.

Carshalton’s Ted Symes will be keen to repeat his success from the opening night of the season at Plough Lane, as the Rookie Rods compete for their London Championship.

The capital’s other drivers will also be keen to keep the title in their midst, but face a very strong threat from the quartet of Sussex drivers who dominated the Rookie racing in October.

One local driver who is desperate for a change of fortunes is Banger driver Keith Conlon.

He began the new Refine Metals League as the hot favourite, after excellent performances during the summer at the Aldershot and Arlington raceways.

Things started well for Conlon and his team mate as they headed the early table, but the wheels have come off the proverbial wagon in recent weeks with mechanical problems and a roll-over into the safety fence.

He did win a heat last week, but then finished outside of the top three in the final. Currently Conlon sits in sixth position in the league, although a couple of wins will see him rapidly climb the table.

The four-formula card is completed by the thunderous V8s with their classic Chevrolet engines.

Seasoned campaigner Peter Moss Snr is having a storming run in the big beasts currently, and is likely to do well again around the tight oval he knows very well.

The first race of the evening begins at 5:30pm.
