Brentford winger Marvin Williams has warned strikers Nathan Elder and Charlie MacDonald he can challenge them for a permanent slot up front.
The 21 -year-old, signed as a wide man from Yeovil Town in the summer, scored his first goal for the club in Tuesday’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy 2-2 draw with Luton Town.
The Bees eventually exited the competition on penalties having let slip a two-goal first-half lead for the second time in the tournament.
Williams impressed boss Andy Scott as a striker in the 2-0 Carling Cup defeat at Championship side Swansea City and was on the mark mid-week days after celebrating the birth of a new baby boy.
And the versatile forward, who made up for a glaring miss in the weekend triumph over Macclesfield Town, can’t wait for another chance to prove his worth.
”I’ve always said I’d like to be a striker in the future of my career. I’ve played there when I was younger and broke through as a striker,” he said.
“I can also play on the right and will play wherever the gaffer wants me to, although I do enjoy playing up front the most.
“I think it adds another dimension that I can play in both positions and I was quite happy with my performance.
“I’d like to think that playing up front tonight plants a note in the gaffer's head.
“Chas and Nath are doing well right now so I know it is going to be tough, but I'm happy to play on the right and I just want to get back in the team and play wherever I can.”
Williams missed the 1-0 win at Chesterfield after his girlfriend went into labour and missed a golden opportunity to double his side’s lead in the dying minutes of Saturday’s win over Macclesfield.
And he admitted his new arrival was a distraction he was pleased to finally overcome when he netted his side’s second in Tuesday’s draw.
“It was a shame about the result, but personally it was good to get off the mark. I've missed a few sitters in recent games,” he added.
“The lads had a bit of banter about the chance I missed on Saturday, where I was too busy thinking about how I would celebrate the birth of my son before I put it in. This one is dedicated to him.
“I don’t think Tuesday should have got as far as penalties. We didn't do what we should have defensively. Lessons are be learnt, but we’d rather learn it in this competition than the league.”
