Tooting & Mitcham United boss Frank Wilson is not giving up the play-off fight this season, but he is preferring to consider the bigger picture.

Despite a decent run of form since the new year, which came to a halt last weekend with a 2-0 defeat at Hastings United, the Terrors are still 16 points off the top five in Ryman Division One South and seemingly out of the race.

But since a rebuild in October, Wilson is delighted with the balance in his squad, and he reckons the future at Imperial Fields is bright – however, he acknowledged they need to do things right.

He said: “We know the deficit to the play-offs is a little bit large, but until it is mathematically impossible we will try to win as many games as possible.

“We now have such an excellent and well-balanced squad – so it’s about keeping those players together and having a plan in place for pre-season and next season, you need continuity and stability to be successful.

“Folkestone are testament to that, they have been play-off finalists for goodness knows how many seasons prior to this, and it looks like they are getting their just rewards because they’re so many points ahead at the top.

“They are in that position because they have kept a steady ship over the past four or five seasons, and that is where we want to be.”
