Beavers closing in on top flight

Hampton Richmond will face Eastbourne Borough for a place in the Blue Square Premier, non-league football's top division.

The Beavers dramatically beat Fisher Athletic 4-2 on penalties after a nailbiting second leg to their Blue Square South play-off at the Beveree yesterday.

Having drawn 1-1 in the first leg, Hampton struggled to get going yesterday with Shaun Batts missing in front of an empty goal and Beavers keeper Ian Hodges making good saves.

But Hampton looked stronger in extra time and Fisher's goal survived one remarkable scramble.

Lawrence Yaku, Shaun McAuley, keeper Lovett and sub Glen Harris scored penalties in the shoot out for Hampton, with Luke Hickey and Batts blazing over the bar to leave the hosts victorious with a kick to spare.

Eastbourne beat Braintree Town 3-0 on the day to coast into the final 5-0 on aggregate.
