New Hampton & Richmond Borough boss Alan Dowson has moved to keep a lid on expectations at the Beveree.

The 44-year-old is unbeaten in his first two games in charge after Saturday's 2-1 win over East Thurrock United, which came care of goals from Billy Jeffreys and Charlie Moone.

The Beavers are still in the bottom three having lost six of their opening 10 games.

And, while Dowson is confident he can get the club back into the Conference South, the manager's priority is to ensure Ryman Premier League survival this season.

"We’re are a quarter of the way through the season and the table doesn’t lie. The current squad is not good enough,” he said after last week's 2-2 draw at Hendon.

“This is a job I have wanted for a while and the first thing is to make sure we stay in this league.

“If players do not want to be part of this football club they are welcome to leave.

“If I did not think I could get this club back into the Conference South then I would not have come here, but lets make sure we have a squad good enough to be in this league first.”

And the manager expected Charlie Moone, scorer of the winner on Saturday, to be a key part of his masterplan.

“Charlie is a great player. I’ve been chasing him for years,” he added.

“He bangs in 40-goals-a-season and needs an arm around him from time to time.”

He joked: “He is not the best looking bloke, so I’ve told him I want him facing goal and scoring, not dropping deep and looking in my direction.”
