Boss Andy Scott insists it is time his side reproduced the form against the bottom sides that has frustrated the likes of Leeds United, Norwich City, Charlton and Southampton this season.
Defender Leon Legge’s first league goal claimed a deserved 1-1 draw with the Saints at Griffin Park on Tuesday, a result that could have been better had Kevin O’Connor found the net from a 70th minute spot-kick.
It means the Bees have not been beaten at home by any of the so-called big sides in League One and Scott reckons they must replicate that level of performance at struggling Oldham Athletic on Saturday.
“Leeds, Norwich, Charlton, Colchester and Southampton have come here and we haven’t been beaten. We have proved we are capable of picking up results against the better teams,” he said.
“Clearly against the sides towards the bottom we haven’t done so well, but we have picked up that form recently.
“Defensively we have improved a hell of a lot and have the third best record in the league.
“We are slowly improving in all areas, but we need to make sure we are keeping the same intensity and setting standards that are kept week in, week out .
“If we do that no team will have an easy ride against us.”
Legge’s remarkable rise from Ryman League Premier Division Tonbridge Angels to League One continued unabated against Southampton as he kept million-pound striker Rickie Lambert quiet at Griffin Park.
And the 24-year-old admits his non-League education is only going to stand him in good stead at Boundary Park this weekend.
“I don’t know what Oldham’s like, but I’ve heard it is pretty bad and its going to be cold,” he added.
“I’ve played at some bad places in non-League, so the pitch won’t bother me too much being a defender.
“You learn something in every game because you are playing up against different strikers and different systems.
“I don’t know Oldham’s strikers, but they’ll play differently to Southampton and you just have to adapt.”
Brentford’s next three games: Jan 30 Oldham Athletic (a), Feb 6 Gillingham (h), 13 Wycombe Wanderers (h).
