Brentford head coach Dean Smith breathed a sigh of relief after Tuesday night’s win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, and declared “we have put some ghosts to rest”.
Two goals from John Swift, and a Sergi Canos strike, sealed a first win in four Championship games, bringing to an end a run of three consecutive defeats.
Smith and co have endured a torrid spell since the new year, winning just once in nine games before the victory over Wolves.
And prior to the shut-out on Tuesday, Bees had conceded 10 goals in three games against Brighton, Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday – although Smith was quick to point out the quality of the opposition.
“We have been through a tough period of time against clubs with bigger budgets than us,” he said.
“We try and be as competitive as we can. Losing a man at Sheffield Wednesday made it difficult and I thought that we were competitive on Saturday [against Derby].”
He added: “The win over Wolves was very satisfying because we have put the ghosts to rest from the last couple of results.
“We won’t deny we have had a tough time and some of the goals we have conceded haven’t been great.
“It was important to keep a clean sheet because we have conceded a number of goals over the last few weeks. That gives everyone a boost going into the weekend.”
