Bees United chairman and Brentford director David Merritt has labelled the past decade as an immense one in the club's history.

Today marks the 10th anniversary of the day the Bees United (BU) - the Brentford Supporters Trust - became the majority shareholder in the Griffin Park club.

Small beginnings: Former Bees boss Andy Scott and Kevin O'Connor with the League Two title trophy in 2009

Current FA chairman Greg Dyke became chairman of the club under the terms of the takeover in 2006, which saw then-BU board members Brian Burgess and Chris Gammon join the Bees board and confirmed the departure of Ron Noades.

Burgess and Gammon, in the decade since then, have led the development of the Brentford Community Stadium at Lionel Road and seen BU launch an initial partnership deal with Matthew Benham, before going on to sell their shareholding to the same man in 2012.

The Bees are now an established Championship club - no longer alternating between Leagues One and Two - with promotion to the Premier League in their sights.

“The ten years since BU took majority ownership of Brentford have been immense for the club," said Merritt.

"It was Brian Burgess and his board at Bees United that created that historic moment for the club, and it has been Matthew Benham who has enabled the club to be so successful since.

"We started the decade in crisis – we finished it with the most successful season since World War Two, and we head in to this anniversary year for Bees United more positive than ever.”
