Brentford’s new head coach Dean Smith has swept into Griffin Park with the aim of taking the Bees to the very highest level.

Smith, 44, was unveiled today as the successor to Marinus Dijkhuizen, who was sacked in September with the Bees struggling at the wrong end of the Championship.

Interim boss Lee Carsley has forced a turnaround in fortunes, which saw him pick up the manager of the month award for October, but he has always insisted his future lay with player development and away from south west London.

After 10 games in charge, Carsley has been replaced with Walsall boss Smith, who brings in Richard O’Kelly as his assistant.

Smith said: "There are no targets. It's about the aim of the football club and that is getting into the Premier League.

"There is a lot of very good players here that I can develop further and get better."

He added: "Managing in the Championship is a great way of showcasing what I am about.

“I have come to manage in the Championship and manage a club going upwards."
