Brentford head coach Marinus Dijkhuizen admitted Sergi Canos's Barcelona breeding helped secure a first home win of the season for the Bees on Saturday.

The 18-year-old, on loan at Griffin Park from Liverpool until January. inspired his side to come from a goal down to triumph 2-1 over Championship new boys Preston North End.

Daniel Johnson put North End ahead inside the first minute and it looked for a long time like that would be the decisive goal.

But Canos, making only his second Football League appearance, set up Lasse Vibe for the equaliser a minute after his introduction on the hour before Marco Djuricin scored the winner three minutes later.

"Sergi is a real winger and with his first touch to set up a goal was brilliant," said Dijkhuisen.

“He gave us great energy and I think that every touch he had for the first 15 minutes was great and that was a great achievement for him.

"It is difficult to come on as a sub with the intensity of the game over here, especially as a young guy, but he has had a good education with Barcelona and he is technically very good, so it is a good move for him.”

Maxime Colin was added to the long list of injuries at Griffin Park on Friday and Dijkhuizen admitted his men showed great character to come from behind for only their second win of the season.

“It was a big relief for us and I really enjoyed the second-half,” he added.

“There was a spirit in the crowd from how we played. We were 1-0 down inside 30 seconds and struggled in the first 30 minutes of the game, but then we got better and better in the game.

"We needed the win for me and for the players, staff, for myself and for the crowd. It was a big win for us.

“The boys showed a lot of character in that second-half. Sergi was a great substitute and he bought real quality into the game.

"We have had a lot of problems over the last couple of months with all our injuries and with losing Maxime Colin as well, so mentally it has been very tough for the players, myself and the staff.

"They needed that win at home and it feels great."
