Brentford head coach Marinus Dijkhuizen has admitted striker Andre Gray may have delivered his parting gift to Bees fans.

The 24-year-old climbed off the bench to inspire a late comeback as Djikhuizen secured a 2-2 draw with Ipswich Town on Saturday in his first Championship game in charge at Griffin Park.

The Bees had trailed 2-0 to a goal either side of half-time from the Tractor Boys, but Gray struck two minutes into stoppage time before defender James Tarkowski scrambled home the leveller minutes later.

Championship rivals Hull City, who completed the signing of Bees full back Moses Odubajo on Friday, tabled a seven-figure bid for Gray last week.

And Dijkhuizen fears fans may have seen the last of the former Luton Town striker.

"He may be on his way," said the coach when asked why he had been left out of the starting line-up.

"We talked a lot about it on Thursday and Friday and he said he was mentally not ready to start so it was a joint decision to keep him on the bench.

"We need him and I think he did a great job. There is a lot going on with him. He’s a young guy and it’s difficult for him.”

Dijkhuizen felt his men were a little too direct in the first half but the introduction of Gray and Lasse Vibe in the second half turned things around.

But he admitted a poor opening 45 minutes had left him little option but to chase the game.

“We put more strikers on,” said the head coach, who had a whole host of family and friends in the crowd to see his first competitive game in his new job.

"“That was the only option. We created more pressure, especially Gray’s running at them.

"We created a lot of chances in the last 30 minutes and when we finally scored I thought it was too late but we deserved a draw."
