Bees new boy Jack O’Connell is unlikely to make his Brentford debut this season after revealing he is set to head out on loan for the rest of the season.

The 20-year-old signed a three-and-a-half year deal on transfer deadline day to make the move from Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers.

O’Connell, who went to school with fellow Brentford loan signing Chris Long, made his name on loan at Rochdale last season and made 19 appearances for the League One side earlier this season.

Boss Mark Warburton believes the left-sided defender can fulfill his potential at Griffin Park, but the England U19 international knows he will have to wait his turn for a chance to impress the Bees faithful.

“I think the first thought is for me to go back to Rochdale, or another League One club, and play more games,” he told the club's website.

"Then I will come back in pre-season and fight for a place. I love playing, like any player, I just want to play.

"Brentford are flying. This is a club that is going forward and that is what they said to me. That is one of the biggest reasons why I have signed.

"I want to hit the ground running in pre-season, if I go out on loan, and then get a spot in the team."
