Stuart Dallas might have got injured the last time he was called up for international duty, but it will not stop the Brentford midfielder answering the call again.

The 23-year-old picked up a leg injury in training 24 hours after being called up to the Northern Ireland squad by Michael O’Neill for the European Championship qualifier against Hungary on September 7 – forcing him to withdraw.

Dallas scored the winner in Saturday’s 1-0 triumph over Rotherham United in only his eighth start of a campaign that has seen him score six goals in a total of 20 league and cup appearances this term.

Boss Mark Warburton reckons he will make his mark many times for his country when he gets his chance.

“Stuart has been on standby many, many times. He actually got injured the last time he went away and that is why he has not been in more recent squads,” he said.

“In fact he got injured on international duty the last time he went away.

“ He is a young and talented player and there is no doubt that, going forward, he will have lots of caps, I’m sure.”

And having got his name in the headlines again, Dallas is keen to stay there and be ready should get a call again from O’Neill in March when his side host Finland.

“It was frustrating to get injured while I was away, it could have happened anywhere. I had to take time out of the game,” he said.

“I’ve haven’t been able to go [on international duty] since then because I have been injured, but hopefully if I can stay fit and keep working hard I might get involved.

“There is a friendly against Scotland in March a few days before the Finland game, so there is a way to go yet.”
