Sutton United manager Paul Doswell said ‘it was a dream come true’ to see his side come from behind to beat AFC Wimbledon 3-1 and set up a lucrative tie against Leeds United.

The match was a landmark for both teams as Sutton reached the FA cup fourth-round for the third time in their history, the last coming when they beat Coventry City, then in the top flight, in 1989.

For Wimbledon the defeat on Tuesday night was another loss against Sutton, the first team they played as a reorganised club back in 2002.

The U’s sank the league one team with two late goals from Maxime Biamou and Dean Fitchett to earn a TV deal potentially worth £300,000 against Premiership-hopefuls Leeds United.

Mr Doswell said the windfall from the fourth-round tie with Leeds United would be ‘life changing money’.

He said: “It will allow us to move on in areas that we have not been able to before and we will look to pay the loan on the 3G pitch. It also takes the pressure off us for once.”

The U’s manager previously told the Sutton Guardian that the club would also renovate the dressing rooms from the under-eight through to the 18-year-old sides and replace their boiler with any money from their cup ties.

Mr Doswell also said it was a ‘dream come true’ to reach the fourth round and added that he thought his side had chance against the West Yorkshire club due to the club’s ‘fantastic support’.

He then praised AFC Wimbledon and their manager Neal Ardley who he dubbed a ‘class act’.

He said: “He stayed 20 minutes after the game to shake my hand and wish us well and I thought that was a magnificent gesture.

“It will live with me for a long time and really showed a lot about the club and Neal.”

Erik Samuelson, chairman of AFC Wimbledon, said: “We are obviously deeply disappointed about the result. We are on a long journey and the FA Cup is a great distraction, while knowing that we are not going to win it.

“I’m gutted, but I’m pleased for Bruce (Bruce Elliot –Sutton United chairman) and I was saying to him after the game ‘maybe you shouldn’t have won’ as it can be a distraction from the league.

“To be honest we have already moved on, but we’ll look out for the result.”

Sutton United will host Leeds United at Gander Green Lane at 2pm on Sunday, January 29.

The match will be televised on BT Sport 2 from 1.30pm the same day.
