Sutton United manager Paul Doswell has strengthened his strikeforce ahead of Saturday's crunch FA Cup clash with Cheltenham Town by signing Matt Tubbs from Forest Green Rovers.

The former Crawley Town, AFC Wimbledon and Portsmouth striker, has already scored twice against his new club this season for both Forest Green and, most recently, Woking during a loan spell.

The good news for Sutton fans is their new man will be eligible for tomorrow's game and is eager to put his FA Cup experience to good use.

Tubbs was part of the Crawley Town side which lost 1-0 to Manchester United in the Fifth Round in front of 75,000 fans at Old Trafford in 2011 and wants to taste more cup glory with his new club.

He told SUFCtv: "There's always one lower league team that always has a run in the cup and hopefully this year it can be Sutton again.

"There's a good group of lads here. I've played with a few of them before and there's a good sense of unity in the camp which goes a long way.

"I know Craig McCallister [Sutton striker cup-tied for tomorrow] really well from my time at Crawley and he was a key factor in me signing here."

Sutton etched their name into FA Cup folklore with a string of giantkilling acts in the late 80s and early 90s, most notably a 2-1 victory over First Division Coventry City in 1989.

Fans will be hoping the club can write a new chapter in its recent history as it bids to make the Third Round for the first time since 1993's 3-2 defeat at Notts County.

Cup fever has gripped Gander Green Lane once again this week with the media making a beeline for the club to interview coaching staff and officials in anticipation of yet another cup upset.

The BBC's Football Focus programme will come live from the Borough Sports Ground tomorrow and the FA Cup itself will be there, giving fans the chance to have their picture taken with the most famous piece of silverware in English football from 11.30am.

The mood at Gander Green Lane is upbeat and positive, despite Tuesday's 6-0 home defeat to Dover Athletic.

Doswell, who took full responsiblity for the heavy loss, has acted swiftly to lift fans' spirits by not only signing much-admired marksman Tubbs but teasing supporters with details of another potential new addition to his talented squad.

The Sutton manager posted on the supporters' forum that he's put his black book to good use once again by talking to an exciting 22-year-old winger with Football League experience who he feels would be the ideal replacement for Tom Bolarinwa who left the U's in the summer for Grimsby Town.

Sutton will be without defender Dean Beckwith for the Cheltenham game following his sending off against Dover on Tuesday.
