Second half goals from Lyle Taylor and Adebayo Akinfenwa gave AFC Wimbledon a 2-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle in the League Two play-off final at Wembley.

The Dons were worthy winners as they secured a sixth promotion since being reformed in the Combined Counties league to march into League One next season.

The Dons first chance came after Tom Elliott was fouled in midfield and Callum Kennedy floated a free kick into the six yard box. Lyle Taylor got a touch but the ball was easily gathered by Luke McCormick.

Wimbledon threatened again when Taylor found himself in space on the right of the box, but his shot was deflected for a corner. After Plymouth partially cleared the corner from the right Jake Reeves volleyed wide from outside the box.

Jake Jervis displayed a moment of skill for Plymouth when he won the ball on he right and whipped in an excellent ball, which was gathered by Kelle Roos.

Plymouth narrowly avoided conceding an own goal when a Wimbledon free kick was touched against his own post by Kelvin Mellor.

Argyle enjoyed a rare foray forward when Mellor broke down the left with his excellent cross into the six yard box headed clear under pressure by Darius Charles.

As half time approached The Dons' Kennedy let fly from 30 yards, with his shot well held by McCormick.

Early in the second half Wimbledon found success breaking down the left flank, with both Barcham and Taylor putting dangerous crosses into the box.

For Plymouth a fine free kick from Graham Carey brought an equally fine save out of Kroos, diving to his left to clutch the ball.

The Dons went ahead with a little over ten minutes remaining. After Kennedy's poor corner was part-cleared he was given a second opportunity and his cross from the right was deftly steered home into the bottom left hand corner by Taylor.

Substitute Adebayo Akinfenwa came close to doubling the Dons' lead only to see his goal-bound header from a Taylor cross tipped over the bar at full stretch by McCormick.

Deep in added on time substitute Adebayo Azeez won a penalty, which Akinfenwa calmly slotted past McCormick to seal promotion.
