After the Mayor of London Boris Johnson called in AFC Wimbledon’s new stadium planning application, a group of fans is urging all football fans and London resident to get behind a “London calling” campaign.

The Dons recently published an appeal for supporters to write to candidates for the mayoral election in support of the plans for a Plough Lane return.

Bring The Dons Home (BTDH) is urging as many people, whether Wimbledon fans or not, to do their bit and show the strength of feeling behind this proposal.

A spokesman for Bring the Dons Home (BTDH) said: “In one of his last acts as London Mayor, Mr Johnson elected not to ratify Merton Council’s unanimous approval for the AFC Wimbledon/Galliard application.

“The Mayor was advised by the Greater London Authority planners that there were ‘no sound grounds to intervene’, but despite this he ‘called-in’ the application for a subsequent hearing.

“This will take place after the election and will be heard by his successor – either Sadiq Khan of the Labour Party or Zac Goldsmith of the Conservative Party.”

BTDH has created a form that will automatically be sent to Khan and Goldsmith that fans can fill in showing their support for the plans.

In the meantime, Dons chief executive Erik Samuelson has refuted claims that the move home has been delayed by the Major's decision.

He said: "We cannot prepare what we are going to do until we know whether Boris Johnson is going to hear it or if it will be the new man.

"If it is Boris, the hearing will have to be before the election, otherwise we are realistically talking July."

He added: "The first question I asked of our project manager was 'What is the effect on our timescale?'

"He said: 'We can still make 2018-2019 with a July decision.'

"So it is still on track, even if we have to wait for the new man to make a decision."
