Brentford slipped to the first league defeat of the Marinus Dijkhuizen era with a 1-0 defeat to Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday.

In a game lacking much in the way of quality, the Bees will be disappointed to have lost to a solitary goal from a corner, which they defended poorly.

This Brentford side remains a work in progress and with what feels like an interminable transfer window still open, Bees fans will hope to see the proceeds of Andre Gray's sale to the hosts re-invested in the squad this week.

The Bees lacked a cutting edge, or even a spark, up front, as they created just two real chances in the whole match.

In the early stages a moment of carelessness from James Tarkowski allowed Lukas Jutkiewicz to burst into the box, with his cross from the byline cross cleared at the near post.

Some intelligent play from Lasse Vibe wide on the right helped him get the better of the defender, but his cross was headed clear.

Brentford won a free kick on the very edge of the box after Michael Duff fouled Akaki Gogia.

Alan Judge saw his free kick pushed away by Tom Heaton, with the keeper in action moment later when he spilled, and then held, Vibe's shot.

Vibe had the best chance of the match when he was played clean through the middle, but his shot lacked conviction and Heaton blocked it.

Burnley took the lead when David Jones' corner from the right was headed home from close range at the back post by Michael Keane.

Scott Arfield wasted a good chance for the hosts when he fired over the bar from the edge of the box with plenty of time and space before shooting.

Alan McCormack had a half chance for the Bees when a cross was initially cleared, before the right back picked it up in midfield and fired in a low shot was Heaton held easily.

Burnley had two good chances to extend their lead when a cross from the right found substitute Sam Vokes in space, but he shot high over the bar. From the goal kick Jutkiewicz latched onto a high ball over the top, but shot just over.

Matthew Taylor then fired a 25 yard free kick wide of the right hand post as Burnley continued to threaten.

In the closing stages Konstantin Kerschbaumer had Brentford's best chance of the half, firing just over from 25 yards.
