Jack Smith admitted that the League Two table does not lie after last weekend’s disappointing finale summed up a season of frustration.

The Dons full-back bagged his third league goal of the season in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home to Cheltenham Town, leaving the Dons 15th in the table.

However, he left the stadium disappointed after a first-class display from Robins’ keeper Trevor Carson kept the Dons at bay in the second half.

Smith said: “It summed up the season. I thought we dominated the game as we created a lot of chances.

“We gave away one goal, which was possibly their only shot of the game, and we haven’t taken our chances so it sums up the last few weeks.

AFC Wimbledon boss cannot quite laugh in the face of Cheltenham Town draw

“We were a bit frustrated again but hopefully we can build on this for next season.”

The Dons failed to win any of their final eight matches of the season and despite their ambitions to finish higher up the table, Smith reckons his side deserved nothing more.

“The table doesn’t lie at the end of the day, and we deserve to finish where we finished,” he said.

“We have come up shorter than we wanted and a couple of results a few weeks ago sort of killed us - such as the defeat at Mansfield in March.

“The results have tailed off a little bit despite putting in some good performances, but they just haven’t gone for us.

He added: “It’s progression from last year as it’s our highest points total but we wanted to get to 60 so we were a little bit short.”
