It seems we have hit the wall.

Dons have tended to stumble a bit near the end of the season in recent years. Two years ago, we went into matchday 44 having lost four games and staring relegation squarely, soberly, in the face.

They pulled it together in time, obviously, but it took a lot of luck to avoid the drop that season.

Last year the threat of relegation was a bit further, but not completely out of sight.

The points deduction from fielding a then-ineligible Jake Nicholson came after Wimbledon had secured safety.

Nevertheless, they finished in the same league place as the previous year, with limp performances marking the end of the campaign.

This year, the April malaise has returned. Wimbledon are mathematically safe, and we have a real opportunity for our highest league finish to date.

Yet we are winless in our past five games, a run which included a shameful capitulation to Dagenham & Redbridge.

I’m not sure what’s behind these late-season slumps. I don’t think anyone else does, either. But it’s definitely on the verge of becoming a 'thing', and not just an annoying coincidence.

The last three games of the campaign will not be easy. Two promotion chasers in the next two weeks before closing the season at home to a Cheltenham side fighting for its life.

It’s not inconceivable we won’t win another game this term.

That would be a shame, for certain. It wouldn’t make the rest of the season irrelevant, but it would close on a sour note.

Once again, expectations are a tricky thing. I’m finding myself asking if one win from the next three is too much to ask.
