Prolific goalscorers do not grow on trees, but if they did Kingstonian new boy Mark Bitmead might just have been plucked from the very top.

The former Ashford Town (Middlesex) striker, who has scored 27-goals in all competitions for the Combined Counties Premier League club this term, made his Ks debut in Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Met Police having signed for the club last week.

Boss Tommy Williams is hoping he can fire the goals that take his side to the Ryman Premier League play-offs and reverse a trend that has seen his men struggle to find the net often enough this term.

And if it doesn’t work out for Ks this season, then the manager hopes Bitmead will still play a key role next year.

“A lot of clubs had shown an interest in him and he wants to further his career,” said Williams.

“He wanted to win the league with Ashford, but it does not look like that will happen, so he has come to us.

“He gets goals and score from wide areas as well as when he players through the middle.

“We needed a goalscorer and hopefully he can boost us to where we want to be.

“If you can get a 30-goal-a-season striker then your draw turn in to wins and 1-0 defeats become draws.

“Its down to him to familiarise himself with us and how we work, which will benefit him for next season.”

Ks host Peacehaven & Telscombe on Saturday, before travelling to play-off rivals Billericay Town and Williams knows the two games are key to his side’s promotion hopes.

“A draw, between two teams who looked like they did not want to lose, was about right”, he said.

“Draws are not bad if you follow them up with a win.

“ There is very little room for error now.

“These two games will give a good indication of where we will end up, so it is very important we get wins from both of them.”
