Sutton United manager Paul Doswell has slammed “faceless” posters on the club’s forum who have criticised his managerial abilities, while revealing his commitment to the club to the tune of a personal £1m investment.

Saturday’s 2-1 over Ebbsfleet United was only the second three-point haul in the Conference South since mid-October.

However, a section of United fans vented their anger on the United forum after Doswell missed the Surrey Senior Cup defeat to 10-man Merstham last Tuesday.

The manager was on a family holiday as United had a two-week break from action in the league.

Doswell said: “I have been hurt by many comments from within the club, but people need to understand what is happening at this football club.

“I personally put in £200k over the summer for the refurbishment. I have never told anyone that. I read that that was from the FA Cup money, and that makes me laugh.

“The club have given me a budget, probably lower to mid-table, and in the seven years I have been here, I have added to that every single week and if there is an over-spend, then it’s my over-spend, I put it in.

“If mistakes are made with players, they are my mistakes, not the club’s mistakes.”

He added: “I am a non-League manager – I believe I have put in close to £1m into this football club over seven years.”

Doswell insists he will not walk away in the face of the criticism, nor will he be distracted from his ultimate goal – although he admitted he has come close over the past week.

He said: “We have some exciting times coming up. It’s more than just football on the pitch.

“When I eventually leave, I want to leave a legacy where we have hundreds of children playing football, that we become the community club we all want to be, and I am going to put a lot of effort over the next two years to make that happen.”

He added: “But when my wife gets hurt, and my father and brother are ringing me up, asking me what “What are you doing there?” – it’s made me have a real think this week.

“I have the best board in the world, the best volunteers in the world and the best committee to deal with.

“I just have to be careful that I don’t get put off course, but to read some of the comments about me being away on a weekend when I knew we weren’t playing, it gets deep into your soul, it makes you wonder what you’re doing.

“It’s hurt my family as much as it’s hurt me, and that’s unacceptable.”

Doswell has recruited former Woking goalkeeper Aaron Howe, and made Alan Julian available for loan.

Meanwhile, former United favourite Damian Scannell has returned on loan until the end of the season.

Doswell has also added centre back Brad Gascoigne from Hereford United, and striker Dan Fitchett from Alsdershot.
