John Scales has concerns ahead of the AFC Wimbledon and Liverpool FA Cup tie – has he left it too late to get tickets?

The former Dons defender has double reason to be at the CRRS come January having spent seven years in a blue and yellow shirt, and two years as a Red.

Scales was so excited about the draw, he left it almost 24 hours to start ringing round on his ticket hunt.

Chances are the 48-year-old will not have any problems, after all, he is one of the Dons legends who played in the FA Cup on that famous day in 1988 – and it is a day that is fuzzy in the memory, save for one moment.

“My abiding memory of that day is walking up the famous steps, seeing Princess Diana at the top, and knowing she’d be handing me my winners’ medal,” he said.

“To think about the hundreds of famous people who had walked up the same steps, I’d watched lots of them on TV myself, and now I was doing that – apart from that, the day was a bit of a blur.”

He added: “When I saw the draw on Monday, my first emotion was pure excitement. What a mouth-watering prospect.

“Then it became apparent that this marked a great moment in AFC Wimbledon’s history.

“What the fans, the people behind the scenes have achieved really encapsulates the spirit of the Wimbledon I played for.

“All their efforts over the past 12 years have been rewarded now.”

Scales joined Liverpool in 1994 and would go on to win the League Cup in 1995, and an FA Cup runners’ up medal in 1996.

He said: “My allegiances are a little torn. Wimbledon set me on the career I had, I have a soft spot for the club and the area – and I still live in the area which says it all – and I want them to do well.

“Liverpool are in a difficult period right now. But I have a lot of fond memories from my time there, and I think fundamentally I’m a Liverpool man.

“Either way I cannot wait for the game, I just hope I can get some tickets.”
