Sutton United’s company secretary Dave Farebrother is calling on the community to dig deep to raise funds for a new pavilion.

The club has created a Crowdfunder page with the aim of raising £20,000 towards the Collingwood Community Pavilion – a project aimed at providing youngsters who use the Collingwood recreation ground with facilities including changing rooms and a refreshment centre.

So far, fans have pledged £5,670 towards the £20,000 target, and Farebrother has revealed they have been promised a £10,000 pledge, effectively meaning £4,330 is needed before the Crowdfunder deadline on June 6.

The whole project, which would back on to Gander Green Lane, is expected to cost around £600,000.

Farebrother said: “Once the deadline has passed, we will go to the Football Foundation and we’re hoping for a grant of up to 70 per cent, and then it will be a question of finding grants from elsewhere.

“The £20k target is something for the community to get behind, and is a figure we know is very achievable.”

Collingwood recreation ground was rescued from disrepair when Sutton United took on the task of cutting the grass and creating football pitches for the club’s younger teams.

The Collingwood Community Pavilion project, which would also include rooms for community use, is part of a £1m overall redevelopment plan for Gander Green Lane.

The plan includes creating a pitchside stand to replace the oval terracing at the Collingwood Road end.
