Darren Jones was an AFC Wimbledon hero on Saturday after his last gasp goal deep into injury time stole a point at Burton Albion.

His first strike since joining the Dons from Shrewsbury Town in January keeps six points between Dons and the League Two drop zone.

The Dons have now drawn three of their past four games, but while Burton boss Gary Rowett was furious with the referee for the amount of injury time, Neal Ardley saw the late equaliser as testament to his side's fighting spirit.

Promotion-chasing Burton took the lead through Billy Kee's penalty after Alan Bennett fouled Dominic Knowles.

Ross Worner kept the hosts at bay, until Jones popped up more than five minutes into injury time to convert George Francomb's corner.

Ardley told Dons Player: All the teams are under pressure from top to bottom in this league, whether that’s going for the play-offs, the top three, or fighting to stay away from the bottom.

"It’s incredibly tight and the fans and players have to come together as a club and give everything during the last nine games. The players care."

He added: "Burton is a tough place to come. We've played two good teams in the last two games.

"All we did wrong in the first half was give away a silly penalty. Other than that, there wasn't much happening and they didn't open us up or create bundles of chances.

"We changed it, upped the tempo and could have won it."

Rowett said: "Five minutes went up on the board; we had one substitution within that five minutes, which is 30 seconds, and yet we played seven and a half minutes and the goal came on seven minutes.

"To get done by that is particularly galling. Yes, we needed to defend the corner better, but you could see the players were out on their feet with maybe 15 or 20 minutes to go."
