After watching his Carshalton Athletic side self-destruct on Tuesday night, boss Stuart Massey instructed his players to take a long, hard look in the mirror.

Robins lost 4-0 at home to Wingate & Finchley on a dismal night where the only highlight was a defeat for fellow strugglers Cray Wanderers that keeps Massey’s men off the foot of the Ryman Premier League table on goal difference.

The season of goodwill is meant to be over, but not for Robins who gift-wrapped their guests three goals with Keystone Cop defending.

And there was further bad news for Massey when it was revealed that skipper Lewis Taylor had been made the subject of a seven-day approach from rivals Horsham of Division One South – the manager and player were due to have a showdown meeting yesterday [Wednesday].

But, according to the Robins boss of just three games, the most pressing issue at Colston Avenue is not necessarily on the pitch.

“I have been surprised by the lack of professionalism and poor attitude of some of the players,” he said.

“When we have training and only a few turn up, or they come in dribs and drabs, then it makes my job very hard.

“When a match is postponed, I expect all the players to come in for training, we need to be united and as one, but that is not the case.”

He added: “Some of the more senior players have surprised me more than most, they need to be leaders.

“Adriano [Moraes] is a case in hand, he could not play tonight [against Wingate] because he had university commitments, but he has been suspended for too many games.

“He needs to ask himself some serious questions, and most of the players here need to look at themselves in the mirror and ask themselves if they have the commitment.”

Carshalton were 1-0 down at half-time when former favourite Ola Sogbanmu was first to convert a rebound.

A brace of defensive foul ups in the second half sandwiched a fine Wingate goal to end a miserable night in foul conditions.

Massey said: “The final goal [a skewed clearance by keeper Shaun Phillips that went straight to Lewis Jones] epitomised the night, our performance and the current state of mind here.

“We’ve brought in Billy Dunn as a striker from Horsham and he should have had a couple of goals, but he has missed the chances.

“We’re getting in players who are good enough to keep us in this league, so this is not all about reparing for next season in Division One South.

“The players just need to realise that are not playing for themselves, they are playing for the good name of Carshalton Athletic Football Club.”
