Carshalton Athletic striker Kingsley Aikhionbare believes his team needs to seize the initiative earlier in matches as the Robins fought back from 2-0 down at half-time to earn a valuable point against Enfield Town.

The draw meant Carshalton moved off the bottom of the Ryman Premier League and Aikhionbare, who scored his second goal of the week with a venomous strike on 53 minutes, is confident Carshalton can begin climbing the league table.

“Moving up is a big boost considering our last three performances – we’ve been playing well but not converting that into points,” he said.

“I feel opponents can’t cope with our high tempo game but we have to stop conceding the first goal to give ourselves a chance.”

Aikhionbare believes Carshalton had enough chances in the second-half to take all three points but sub Brendan Murphy-McVey’s coolly taken equaliser on 75 minutes was the end of the scoring in a real game of two halves.

“I think we’ll reflect on the result with a tinge of disappointment,” he added.

“Our performance in the first-half was poor but we put them under so much pressure after the break that we could’ve won it on another day.”

Aikhionbare laughed when reminded of the build-up to his goal because his team-mates continued to probe with the ball while the young forward gingerly dealt with an injury.

“I got a stamp on my foot but, because the lads played on, I slowly forced myself back in front of their 18 yard line,” he said.

“The ball suddenly appeared in my path via Tommy Bradford and instinct just kicked in. My first thought was to go round the keeper but, knowing we needed to get back in the game, I thumped it instead.”

Carshalton look to build on a current three game unbeaten run when they travel to high-flying Maidstone United on Saturday December 14.
