Defeat to Bury has not dampened the boss's positivity in the face of relegation adversity

Carshalton Athletic manager Tommy Williams is expecting a host of twists and turns in the Ryman Premier Division relegation fight.

Despite watching his side lose 3-1 at home to Bury Town on Saturday and returning to the foot of the table, Williams remains resolutely positive about survival.

Ola Sogbanmu had the Robins ahead but promotion-chasing Bury were level at the break from the penalty spot and punished two individual errors in the second half.

The Robins, now two points adrift at the bottom and having played seven games more than their nearest rivals, go to East Thurrock United this weekend.

Williams said: “There are a lot of points to play for yet and I am a very positive person.

“We are a young side and a lot of them are learning, and they’re learning the hard way, but I still believe anyone down the bottom can get on a little run and get themselves out of trouble.

“I believe there will be twists and turns yet. There are a few clubs that may think they are out of trouble but will find themselves right in the middle of the relegation fight.”

Despite his positivity, Williams could not hide his disappointment after watching a good opening against Bury come to nothing.

“We started brightly and were playing on the front foot. We put them under a lot of pressure and we deservedly went in front.

“I felt it was a soft and dubious penalty to concede just before half-time, and it took the wind out of our sails a bit.

“But I still had the belief we would get something out of the game, but it was not to be. In the end, it was very disappointing.”

Against Bury, Williams was without leading goalscorer Nathaniel Pinney as the striker serves a three-match suspension, which ends after the East Thurrock trip.

Williams said: “He is chomping at the bit to get back. He has scored a lot of goals for us – he would be a miss in any side.”
