Surrey move on talented youngsters

Former Whitgift School batsman Laurie Evans and ex-John Fisher School bowler Simon King signed professional contracts with Surrey Cricket Club this week.

Malden Wanderers star Evans celebrated scoring his maiden first-class century for Durham University's Centre of Excellence against Lancashire in the summer, helping him to an average of 52.14 in four matches.

The 20-year-old bagged a half-century for the MCC in a tour match with the West Indies, prompting him to cut short his studies in the north-east to sign a one-year deal at the Brit Oval.

Off-spinner King bagged 20 wickets in the Surrey second string this season and has been rewarded with a two-year extension to his existing contract.

And for team manager Alan Butcher, who also handed Evans the inaugural Easter scholarship to fund a trip to the Darren Lehman Academy in Adelaide this winter, it is an important step for their development.

"Laurie has been rewarded for a successful first season at Durham UCCE and we have shown faith in Simon King by giving him time to learn his trade," he added.

"I know they will do everything possible to forge a successful career at Surrey. This is a great opportunity for our young players."

Both players are products of the Pemberton Greenish Surrey Academy, making up two of the 10 academy graduates to have signed professional contracts since its formation in 2002.
