Surrey host table cricket competition

Brookfield House School will represent the South East in the national final of The Lord’s Taverners National Table Cricket Competition at Lord’s Cricket Ground on 12 May, after winning yesterday’s regional heat at the Brit Oval, the home of Surrey CCC.

Brookfield House School, from Woodford Green, beat off fierce competition from Marjorie McClure School in the final, following a full day of competition at the Oval.

The other schools participating were Highshore School, Mapledown School and William Morris School.

Children from the five schools are among four hundred disabled youngsters, representing 50 teams from around the country, who are taking part in a series of regional heats before the national final at the ‘Spiritual Home of Cricket’.

Now the Brookfield House School team has the honor of representing the South East at Lord’s in May.

The tournament, which is played on a table tennis surface with special bats and balls, is designed to give disabled youngsters the chance to enjoy the game of cricket and the opportunity to represent their school on a competitive basis.

The Lord’s Taverners, the youth sports charity which will donate nearly £2.5 million this year to help give young people, particularly those with special needs, a sporting chance, has run its National Table Cricket Competition for 11 years.

The competition is again being supported by Lord’s Taverners ambassador and Eastenders star Ricky Groves, who will be on hand at Lord’s to meet all the children and present the coveted trophy to the competition winners.

Matthew Patten, Chief Executive, The Lord’s Taverners said, “The Lord’s Taverners is dedicated to giving young people the opportunity to participate in sporting and recreational activities.

"We are proud of every one of the young people who took part in the South East Regional play-offs and look forward to seeing the Brookfield House School team at Lord’s.”
