Banstead’s Surrey all-rounder Matthew Spriegel reckons the side’s pre-season trip to Abu Dhabi is more than just a jolly - it is an integral part of helping the side to a flying start to the season.
The Brit Oval side will face the Yorkshire, UAE and Middlesex this week as part of the Emirates ProARCH Tournament, which also sees Sussex, Essex and Lancashire in action.
Spriegel, 22, scored a maiden first-class half century for the club as the Brown Caps were relegated from the Liverpool Victoria County Championship Division One without winning a single four-day game.
And the former Whitgift School student believes adopting a winning mentality in the middle east should help kick start their efforts to secure a swift return to top tier of English domestic cricket under new manager Chris Adams.
“As we found last year, a lot of cricket is about momentum, so if we start well then no matter who plays, it should bode well for us when we get back,” he said.
