Final day showdown looming for Surrey rivals

10:54am Thursday 2nd September 2010

The big issues in the Surrey Championship Premier Division have all been decided with a week to spare.

Reigate Priory were crowned champions on Saturday with a four-wicket win over Sunbury, who had started the day as their nearest rivals.

Wimbledon actually overtook Sunbury into second place with a 15-run win over Sutton.

At the other end of the table, Cobham Avorians and Malden Wanderers have been relegated.

Wimbledon were in fine form against Sutton, with Graham Grace hitting 111 and Paul Pieterse 60 not out as Dons made 209.

Although Arun Harinath hit 43 and Gary Outram 51, Sutton were all out for 194 in reply.

Fifth-placed Ashtead thrashed fourth-placed Banstead by 129 runs.

Ben Jeffery top-scored with 87 and Viv Paper hit 76 as the hosts made 270-4 off 50 overs.

Banstead were bowled out for just 141 in reply.

Weybridge thrashed Cobham Avorians by 103 runs to send their rivals to relegation.

Cobham bowled admirably, keeping Weybridge to a reachable total of 179. Tom Collins got the best figures with 4-50 as Cobham sensed a much-needed victory. However, a sensational bowling performance by Zafar Ansari prompted Cobham to collapse for a disappointing 76.

Malden are also relegated after a 59-run home defeat to Guildford.

Cheam secured their promotion back to the Premier Division with a seven-wicket victory over Purley built on the back of a magnificent 125 not out from skipper Danny Miller.

Chasing 201-8, a Miller-inspired Cheam reached the target in 47 overs.

Spencer’s Division One promotion hopes are over after they lost at league leaders Normandy.

Spencer were all out for 111 before Normandy reached 115 with 18 overs and four wickets to spare.

Epsom face relegation from Division One if they don’t win their final game of the season at home to Brook on Saturday. Epsom crashed to a 94-run defeat to Old Whitgiftians on Saturday.

Worcester Park face Division Two champions Camberley on Saturday with their promotion hopes still in the balance after a 42-run defeat at closest rivals Beddington on Saturday.

Chasing Beddington’s 232, Park crashed to 113-8 in reply.

Beddington must beat Farnham on Saturday and rely on Park slipping up.

Mitcham face Warlingham in their final match of the season on the Cricket Green this Saturday still not sure of retaining their Division Four status.

Last Saturday’s five-wicket defeat at Woking & Horsell means they go into their final match just four points ahead of second-bottom Old Hamptonians.

Saturday’s Premier Division fixtures: Ashtead v Reigate Priory, Cobham Avorians v Banstead, Guildford v Sunbury, Malden Wanderers v Sutton, Weybridge v Wimbledon.
