Sytze Bijker is swapping his Nomads shirt for an England one for a weekend of international korfball competition.

Bijker, who plays for Epsom-based Nomads, will be up against Scotland, Wales and Catalonia in the European Championships, held at Whitgift School in Croydon.

The opening match sees England play Scotland at 9.15am on Saturday.

Also taking their place for the home nation will be Steph Allen of Croydon-based Trojans, alongside seven players from Tooting-based Bec - Caitlin Fitzgerald, Jo-Anne Wilson, Joe Bedford, Andrew Hall, Ben King, Blake Palfreyman and Davesh Patel.

King, who has been named skipper, said: “It’s a great honour to be asked to be the England captain.

"It’s the most exciting and dynamic squad I’ve been a part of for a long time and I have high hopes of strong performances.

"Training has been going well and we have an opportunity next weekend to test ourselves against some strong opposition.”

Max Buttinger, the development officer of the London Korfball Association, said: “We’re delighted that England Korfball has selected London for this event.

“To see the top English players in action is a real opportunity for the London korfballing community.”

He added: “Many of these England players have come through the youth ranks with London clubs so it’s great to see them doing so well.”
