Esher CC skipper Grant Meadows has targeted three wins in the final five Division Two games to seal a first promotion in four years.

In his first year in charge, Meadows has guided Esher to the top of the table and within touching distance of a return to Division One.

And, while he is not taking anything for granted, those three wins could come inside three weeks against the bottom three clubs.

Meadows said: “I know cricket is not played on paper, but I would expect to beat those teams at the bottom.

“I only hope the weather does not interfere – we’re the only team at the top who have had an abandoned game and we don’t want another.”

Esher were too strong for Trinity Mid-Whitgiftians on Saturday, winning by 93 runs – Rob Mutucumarana (56) and Peter Scott (51) guided Esher to 220-9 declared. With the ball, Khurram Irshad was in fine form, taking 6-35 as Trinity crumbled to 127 all out.

The season returns to the shorter format this weekend, something Esher’s next visitors in rock-bottom Ashford should be wary of.

Meadows said: “We are better suited to the shorter format of the game as our batting line-up is stronger than our bowling attack – in the longer format the toss is key and I have not won a toss for a long time.”
