Andy Scott believes the fact Brentford are not involved in the promotion mix-up this season could help them steal a march on their rivals come August.

The Bees are 12 points adrift of the play-off places with three games remaining after Saturday's 2-2 draw with Bradford City at Griffin Park.

Glenn Poole's opener and a wonder strike from defender Alan Bennett secured Scott's men a share of the spoils ahead of this weekend's trip to Lincoln City.

Scott has spent the past fortnight examining his personnel in different combinations, and the rookie manager thinks it could give his side an advantage as he launches next season's bid for honours.

"We have got a good nucleus of a squad, but it needs to be stronger and the past few weeks has allowed us to assess what needs to be strengthened," he said.

"The past few games I have enjoyed watching - particularly against Bradford - and I am excited about seeing more performances like that next season. We could have been thinking about something better than mid-table this season had we not had such a bad start.

"Some other teams will have more money to splash around in the summer, but we will come back refreshed and, with the work we have already done under our belts, we can make a good start."

Scott has revealed he will leave no stone unturned in the search for talent, and has not ruled out dipping in to the depths of the Ryman Leagues to bolster his squad.

He added: "Recruiting non-league players alone is not going to see us challenging at the top end of the table.

"But, if we can find a gem and polish it, like we have done with the likes of Karleigh Osborne, we stand a chance.

"I am prepared to look below Blue Square South to do that if need be."

Remaining games: Apr 19 Lincoln City (a), 26 Hereford United (h), May 3 Stockport County (a).
