Former Bees boss Terry Butcher was solely responsible for star midfielder Gary Smith being a bit-part player at Griffin Park earlier in the season, according to Andy Scott.

The 24-year-old playmaker put in a man-of-the-match performance - described as outstanding by the current manager - in Saturday's 2-2 home draw with Bradford City.

Smith made only three starts and five appearances as a substitute with the ex-England captain in charge, but has blossomed under Scott to become an integral part of the club's revival since December.

His form earned him a contract extension until 2009 earlier this year and he has bounced back from a sending-off at Barnet in February.

And Scott, assistant under Butcher, has revealed he had played no part in the decision to freeze out the former MK Dons player out.

"The manager of a football club picks the side and it was Terry's decision not to play Gary," he said.

"Everyone has opinions but, as assistant, I had no say in selection while he was in charge.

"I am responsible for picking the side now and, while I take advice, it is ultimately my decision.

"Gary is a fantastic player who is strong and brave and has got great ability. He drives the team forward."

The ex-Middlesbrough trainee's partnership alongside Kevin O'Connor in midfield is a major reason why Brentford are now comfortably in mid-table, after flirting with relegation under Butcher.

But Glenn Poole, who profited from Smith's pass for the opening goal on Saturday, believes he is more than just a playmaker.

"Gary is not just about tricks and hitting spectacular passes," Poole said.

"He likes to get stuck in when needed, but he has the quality to hit a slide-rule pass as well.

"I take my hat off to Kevin as well, though. His tackle set things in motion for my goal.

"He and Kevin combine well. They are both important players for us."
