Striker Nathan Elder has told fans Brentford will have no excuses should they fail to make the League Two play-offs next season.

The 23-year-old frontman, currently recovering from an operation to repair a knee cartilage problem, played a role in the Bees' revival last season after switching from Brighton & Hove Albion in January.

Chairman Greg Dyke last week claimed the club would be disappointed if the Bees failed to be involved in the end-of-season lottery next May after making more money available to boss Andy Scott.

And Elder, who bagged four goals in 16 starts last term despite carrying an injury, believes he can spearhead the charge for a top-seven finish when fully fit.

"What Greg has said doesn't add any pressure because I think everyone here believes we have a good enough squad to be challenging," he said.

"With the players we have brought in, it is not as if we can say we haven't got the personnel, the management, the stadium or the fans.

"This club has everything going for it at the moment. There are no excuses for us not to make the play-offs and I will be disappointed if we don't."

Elder is yet to resume jogging since going under the knife a month ago, but is confident of being fit for the start of pre-season training in July.

He expects a fight on his hands for a place in the starting line-up following the arrival of former Croydon Athletic striker Moses Ademola.

And he has vowed there is more to come from him after making an encouraging start to his Bees career.

"I am not saying the injury was holding me back last year, but I think I can definitely get more goals and more assists when I am fit," he added.

"It has been frustrating spending time in the gym, but I know I have to work hard.

"It is not going to be easy to get a place in the team with all the new players coming in."
