Brentford boss Andy Scott has not given up hope of keeping skipper Matt Heywood, named Bees supporters' player of the year last week.

The 28-year-old became a rock at the heart of Brentford's defence, having been out of favour for the early part of the season under former manager Terry Butcher.

Scott offered the ex-Bristol City man a new deal before the end of the season, but is still waiting for an answer, despite being in talks with Heywood's agent.

Should he quit Griffin Park, it would leave Scott with just one contracted centre-back in Karleigh Osborne.

Heywood's award does not necessarily guarantee his signature, with previous recipients Jo Kuffour, Jay Tabb and Sam Sodje having made swift exits after claiming the honour.

But Scott believes his captain, who is known to be shopping around for a better offer, could yet decide to put pen to paper on a cut-price contract.

"Having spoken to Matt since the season ended I believe he would like to sign. We want him to stay," he said.

"I know he is speaking with two other clubs at the moment, but nothing has been signed with them yet and until that happens I think we still have a chance."

Trainees John Mousinho and Charlie Ide were released last week - along with Ricky Shakes, Simon Brown and Craig Pead - with Scott claiming it was in their best interests.

"John is a young lad but he has not ever got regular football under his belt and I think getting that will help him develop. He still has time," he added.

"Charlie just needs a fresh start. Things haven't worked out for him here."

New boys Sam Wood and Moses Ademola are expected to complete their moves from non-league Bromley and Croydon Athletic respectively this week.

The transfers are being partly funded by club fanzine Thorne in the Side and the Lifeline Society.
