Chambers ends 2011 on a high

Trinity pupil Peter Chambers wrapped up a successful 2011 with a commanding victory at the Holly Run cross-country races at Priory Park in Reigate, writes Matthew Kiernan.

The 16 year-old won the U17 men’s title, completing the 2.5-mile course in 15 minutes 25 seconds despite being sent the wrong way by a marshal during the race.

Club compatriot Dom Nolan (15:38) made it a Croydon one-two.

In the one-mile U11s category, Angus Harrington (6:30) ran courageously, leading the near 100-strong field from the start, but was edged by Crawley’s Thomas Thayre with 400m to go.

The 10-year-old was the first of four family members to take part in the day’s racing, with mother Isobel (senior women, 18th), father Rod (senior men, 42nd) and brother Bertie (U15 boys, 25th) also in action.

Another medal came courtesy of Holly Haile in the U15 girl’s race who secured bronze just a single place ahead of her training partner Stevie Lawrence.

Further top 15 finishes were found in Josh Haasz (U15 boys', fourth), Josie Kavanagh (U13 girls', ninth), Omar Harhara (U13 boys', 11th) and Sophie Bates (senior women, 12th).

Six senior men tackled the undulating 5.5 mile course, with Martin Rowe (37:22) leading the challenge in 30th out of the 79 finishers. Other Holly Run Results:

U15 Boys - Robert Spalding (15th), Stirling Gibbons (26th).

U13 Girls – Ellie McCormack (18th).

U15 Girls – Cora Sexton (21st).

Twenty-four hours earlier, Andy Del Nevo (111th, 50:31), Colin Oxlade (133rd, 51:59), Neil Aikman (142nd, 53:03), Julian Dillow (153rd, 54:24) and Keith Brown (171st, 57:30) competed at the South of Thames 7.5 mile cross-country championships at Roehampton Vale.
