Harriers win cross country double

The Herne Hill Harriers extended their unbeaten run this season with an emphatic double team win in the South of Thames Cross Country Championships on December 17, taking home the prestigious six-man Dewar Shield and the 12-man Colman Cup.

Chris Busaileh was the first Harrier home finishing in sixth place with a time of 40 minutes 52 seconds, hotly pursued by team mate and first M40, Brian Wilder, in eighth (41;07). Ben Paviour (10th), Jonny Henderson (13th), John Kettle (15th) and Alan Barnes (17th), closed the first six-man team after a close contest with Hercules Wimbledon over the 7.5 mile course on Wimbledon Common.

Good packing further down the field helped the Harriers secure the Coleman Cup for the first 12-man team to cross the line. The Harriers have now won Dewar Shield more times than any other club in the long history of the race, which has been running for over 100 years.

Geoff Jerwood, team manager, said: “This was a great effort by all who donned their red and black hooped vests. We will aim to keep the winning streak going at the Surrey Champs in January.”
